Shortly after operations started the route network was expanded to include the San Francisco - Honolulu route and also Chicago - Los Angeles. To increase capacity Douglas DC-10s and more DC-8s were acquired. A new route from New York to Hawaii was opened and although the airline was carrying many passengers, it was losing money.
